Candy Fresh

This weekend was an indication that my 9 year old little girl is transforming into a young woman before my very eyes. It was a complete shocker when she said " Momma you need to buy me some deodorant!" (My first thought besides trying not to laugh was, Why does she need deodorant?, second Do they even make it for girls her age? ) As she was relaying to me her instructions from school, she continued on that she needs to wear it on Thursdays (again the questions started in my head as she continued talking, Why only Thursdays?) To her this was serious business, letting me know her explanation of the details. " On Thursdays we have P.E and when we run around the gym and sweat alot , it makes us stink and these stick out" (at this point she is pointing at her barely visible boobies ...What is going to stick out? Are we even talking about her anymore?). This is a whole new set of information I was not expecting. None the less I took her out and bought her some deodorant. ( Which was the cheapest candy smelling teen kind I could find. In my mind this was a waist of money. Kinda like buying play makeup and you know it's not going to serve a real purpose. But it eased her mind and that's all that mattered.) Come to find out today on a field trip, this was all having to do with a funky smell the 3rd/4th grade class was having on Thursdays. ( let's just say some of the 4th grade girls are a little more ahead of the game and it was geared toward them.) I knew one day this day would eventually come, I just wasn't expecting it to be so soon. Good grief, I just started making her wearing those little sport training bras. ( and those really aren't serving much of a purpose) I guess at least this little hurdle is over as entertaining as it was. I can now rest at night knowing my little third grader will be candy fresh once a week.

  1. I swear kids grow up so much faster these days. I think my 9 year old son is going through puberty....it starts this young?!?!

I really had no idea! It scares the daylights out of me!

  2. thats so cute. at least she's aware of a maybe/maybe not potential smell. i remember when i was in school, so many of the girls, and boys, didn't notice or didn't pay any attention to their smells.

they grow up so fast don't they?

  4. LOL. I think I was in 5th grade when they started telling us to wear deodorant. Those days were so awkward!

I just started to read your blog last night, I read it the whole way through! I am so enthralled with families and kids *and on my way to becoming a kindergarten teacher* and can't wait to have my own one day. So for now I will live vicariously through you and the other Mom Blogs! You're stories crack me up!

  5. Aww that's cute.

I'm glad she said something to you, I wore deodorant and shaved my legs in secrecy until early high school, and put my make up on when I got to school. I was too afraid to ask my mom for help with girly stuff. This is probably a blessing, hopefully she'll feel comfortable asking you about other difficult hurdles down the road.

  6. Ah the time will be there before you know and you might even be buying your daughter bigger bras than you would by yourself, like I did today! It's all rather Scary!

  8. funny story - my 4 year old puts on deo everyday!! Not that she smells, she just wanted her own, so I bought her and baby one as well. They each put some on after their showers!! But, they also lather up their tummies, their legs, their feet!!

  9. I say, "Let her stink." It will keep the boys away for a few more years.

Although, having four boys of my own I am guessing if she is really cute and fun to be around they might just plug their noses and go for it anyway :)

  10. So, do they make a Loves Baby Soft deodorant you can buy her :) heheheheh

That must have been one stinky classroom on Thursdays...but now it will smell pungent with numerous fruity deodorants :)

thanks for sharing...i love your writing...in fact, it makes me laugh out loud and sometimes i share it with my husband.

    cheers~

  11. Oh that's so funny! I also have a nine-year-old daughter, and she doesn't need deodorant yet either, but I'm sure it's only a matter of time. At least she came to you and you can rest easy that she won't be the stinky girl in class! I'm more worried about the period talk, and being prepared, and how to discreetly get what she needs from her backpack! I started at 10, and I think my mom had that talk with me at 9. But now that I'm the mom, I can't imagine it...she seems too young! Aaaaahhh! But better than waiting until after it happens and traumatizes her for life! I guess it's time to buy "Are You There God, It's Me, Margaret." :)

  12. I loved the fun scented Teen Spirits when I was younger. At least she took the initiative to ask, that's a good sign for later on :)

  13. I found your blog a couple weeks back and it has totally cracked me up. I have a 9yr old girl also who is obsessed with bras, deodorant, you name it. I keep telling her you really don't need any of this yet but I too have buckled under the constant requests of little girl and purchased sports bras and pear scented deodorant.
